Based on its current scientific output, the University of Georgia in Tbilisi ranks ahead of all private universities and most public universities in the Caucasus region, which includes Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
The assessment draws from data found in Google Scholar—the largest open-access scientific database—and Scopus, the most comprehensive curated scientific database. Scopus is widely used by prominent global university ranking systems, such as Times Higher Education and QS.
According to Webometrics.org, the University of Georgia (UG) ranks 2,974th globally in the Openness Rank, which measures how frequently a university’s researchers are cited. This places UG ahead of all private universities in Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.
Among public institutions, UG ranks behind only three Georgian universities (Ilia State University, Tbilisi State University, and Georgian Technical University) and one Armenian university (Yerevan State University) in the Google Scholar-based rankings. It outperforms other public institutions such as Tbilisi State Medical University, Batumi State University, and all public universities in Azerbaijan, including Baku State University—which ranks 3,235th.
Regarding the Excellence Rank, which measures the number of highly cited papers in the Scopus database, UG again leads all private universities in Georgia, all Armenian universities (including state ones), and all but three Azerbaijani institutions (two public and one private). UG holds the 3,551st spot globally, ranking higher than 152 out of the 158 universities in the entire Caucasus region. Only six universities outrank UG in this metric: Tbilisi State University, Ilia State University, Georgian Technical University, Azerbaijan University, Baku State University, and Azerbaijan State University of Economics.
This positions UG above numerous long-established regional institutions, including Tbilisi State Medical University, Batumi State University, the Free University of Tbilisi, Yerevan State Medical University, the American University of Armenia, Khazar University, and Azerbaijan Medical University, among others.
Overall, out of the 158 Caucasus-based universities listed in the Webometrics database, UG ranks 5th for Openness (Google Scholar profiles) and 7th for Excellence (top-cited Scopus articles), securing its place within the top 5% of universities in the region.
Globally, UG’s Openness Rank (2,974th) also places it within the top 10% of approximately 32,000 universities evaluated by the database.
